NZ-TRAINED filly The Jewel looked unbeatable in the Queensland Oaks after her authorative victory in the Doomben Roses-Gr.3 at her Australian debut.

The result would have gone to plan were it not for a lightly raced and inexperienced filly from the Clarry Connors stable named Zagalia.

Zagalia was set for the race by Connors, and she duly won in a sensational finish, giving supporters many worries before the result was confirmed in the stewards' room.

Crianca went out with a long lead and still had six lengths to spare turning for home. The Jewel and Penny Gem went up to challenge, but Zagalia was finishing best and going away when she veered right out taking the running of The Jewel who was more than a length back on her outside. There is no doubt that The Jewel was impeded and Greg Childs had no option but to protest, but the stewards decided that the two length margin was enough for the placings to stand.

Chris Munce was reprimanded by the stewards for the incident, but Childs got a suspension for causing interference to another horse earlier in the race. It was only the sixth start and second win for Zagalia, a Zabeel filly from a renowned European staying family, who looks to have a bright future.
