QUEENSLAND
Guineas winner True Glo was favourite in the 20 horse field for the Doomben Cup
with Shogun Lodge very solidly supported on course.
True Glo
went wide to go to the front on the turn out of the straight but Freemason in
his customary role took off about 1200m out to take up the running with Bush
Padre behind the leading bunch which also included Spirit of Westbury and
Forest Jim. Freemason shot well clear as he turned the corner and looked home
but Bush Padre sprinted quickly in the last 200m to score with authority for
his talented apprentice rider, Michael Rodd. Maguire put in an eye catcher to
run third with Bedouin close up fourth followed by Grey Song who came from last
in the big field. Shogun Lodge should have been suited by the weight-for-age
conditions but only plodded into seventh place.
Bush
Padre has always shown ability and has been a favourite of trainer Lee
Freedman, who credits his new training establishment for the improvement he has
shown this autumn. In April and May Bush Padre has won three Group races in
succession culminating in the Doomben Cup. Last year's winner Mr Bureaucrat
went amiss during the race and is unlikely to race again.
