MUMMIFY
put the writing on the wall in devastating fashion with an easy win in the
listed Chairman's Stakes a week earlier. He had been placed in Gr.1. events in
Sydney at his previous two starts including third in the Australian Derby.
Pantsonfire
led the field up with Mummify settled one off the rails about midfield after
racing erratically in the early stages. The colt became trapped on the rails
when trying to move forward 400m out and needed luck to get out. In a brilliant
ride, Danny Nikolic waited for a run, got through on the rails as they turned
and the rest was history. Vicksburg came home well for second and third placed
Lord Woburn put in an eye catching finish from from a long way back.
Owned by
10 members of Richmond Football Club, Mummify is trained by Lee Freedman who
has had great success since moving his string to the peaceful surrounds of his
new training establishment at Rye. Mummify is the first Gr.I winner got by
1994-95 Horse of the Year Jeune who has really hit his straps as a sire in last
few months. Besides Mummify, The Linday Park-based sire has been represented
recently by the Gr.1 Oaks-placed Port Adelaide Guineas winner Jameela, the
Hobart Cup-Gr.3 winner Jeune's Mark, and stakes performed two-year-olds
Innocent Laughter and Outback Lad. The South Australian Derby was first run in
1860.
