VICTORIAN country-trained filly Sound Action, who had won four of her previous five starts in tremendous fashion, was all the rage in the Australasian Oaks, the shorter version of the two South Australian Gr.1 classics for fillies. Also in the field were the good Melbourne fillies Lashed and Ribe and recent Adelaide Group winners Yvonne and Nancy Eleanor.

Raven Protector led early with Nancy Eleanor taking over the running coming to the turn. As they made the turn, Sound Action became snookered on the fence but when a gap appeared on straightening Sound Action bullocked her way through and exploded to lead. The big, long-striding filly put a great space behind her in a couple of bounds. Milanova. who had got through on the rails, ran on well for second. Ribe, who ran fourth, pulled up lame with a ligament injury.

Sound Action is trained by Roberta Maguire at Birregurra near Colac, and is easily the best horse she has had. The filly provided both the excited Roberta and jockey Wayne Hokai with their first Gr.1 winner.
