HASNA
was installed favourite with Waterhouse stablemate Yes Boss well supported and
expected to provide stern oppposition after his sterling win over the distance
in the Fernhill Handicap-Gr.3. Yes Boss and Hasna jumped well and led in that
order until the straight with Aim for Gold handy, escaping some scrimmaging in
the first 800m. Yes Boss hung off the fence round the turn and gave in quickly,
a disappointing effort.
Hasna
quickly asserted her superiority and dispelled any doubts about her ability to
last the distance by running the 1600 right out. Bushland finished well and
just failed to beat Aim for Gold for second. Hasna was most impressive and
should have sealed her claim for two-year-old championship honours. Jockey
Lenny Beasley said of Hasna after the race, ìWhatever you tell her she do, she
just does itî.
Maiden
filly Aim for Gold ran very well. By ill-fated End Sweep from an Old Vic (by
Sadler's Wells) mare, she is from the same family as renowned broodmare Eight
Carat. It was Gai Waterhouse's sixth Gr.I for the carnival, a record for the
Sydney Autumn that is likely to stand for a long time.
