ON THE
face of it the Derby field looked strong with Helenus and Hydrometer (first and
second in the Victoria Derby), and St Reims (winner of the New Zealand Derby)
in the field but there still remains a question mark on the class of this
season's staying three-year-old colts.
St Reims
led early at a genuine speed with Helenus and Mummify tracking and the rest of
the field strung out. The New Zealander capitulated quickly at the turn, with
Mummify hitting the front and the well supported Strasbourg coming on strongly.
However, it was Clangalang, an unlucky runner in both the Canterbury and
Rosehill Guineas, who got through on the fence under clever and confident
riding by Scott Seamer, and quickly raced clear for a well deserved win.
Trainer
Leon Caustens has been having temperament and minor injury problems with
Helenus, who disappointed again, and some of the other runners probably did not
handle the soft going. Examination of Clangalang's pedigree, however, should
have pointed to his ability in the going, his sire Clang having won on a dead
track and the stock of grandsire Bellotto absolutely excelling in such
conditions.
