THIS
autumn has yielded a real star in the shape of Grand Armee who could not have
been more impressive in careering away with the rich Doncaster Handicap.
Lightly raced (eight starts for six wins) this horse has seasoned to win at
Group I level at only his second preparation and it was another outstanding
training effort by Gai Waterhouse.
Boreale
and Dash for Cash put on the speed with Grand Armee tracking handily behind
them. Dash for Cash took the lead coming to the turn and raced clear. He looked
likely to go on to victory but Grand Armee accelerated brilliantly and quickly
put the rest out of contention. Lonhro was close enough if good enough, but
lacked his usual devastating turn of foot and could do no better than fourth.
Octagonal's consistent son Boreale held on well for third in front of Lonhro.
Jockey Dan Beasley gained his second Gr.1. success in two weeks, following his
Slipper win on Polar Success.
The race
was robbed of some interest by the scratching of fancied runners Defier and
Shogun Lodge and by the heavy track which did not suit some of the runners.
