EXCUSES had been made for this Victoria Derby winner Helenus in his previous Autumn races and he was was well supported to show his real form in this race.

It was a roughly run race with a number of runners being unlucky, notably Sunday Joy and Clangalang and to a lesser extent Mummify and Fine Society. St Reims jumped in front from his outside barrier and led to the turn from Hydrometer, with Helenus, Clangalang and Sunday Joy well back in running. Hydrometer shot clear in the straight but several horses were coming fast Helenus doing best in a four horses barrage to the line, prevailing by a long neck from Mummify who nosed Sunday Joy out of second. Clangalang was a close up fourth on the fence.

Mummify was forced off the course in a scrimmage rounding the turn, Sunday Joy suffered severe interference (subject of a dismissed protest) in the first 200 metres and Clangalang lost momentum when looking for a rails run through in the straight.
