The George Main Stakes attracted a small but crack field and the race was hailed as a "mini Cox Plate" with Sunline, Lonhro and Defier engaged. It did not disappoint. Jockey Childs had Sunline in her usual position dictating the pace and it was somewhat surprising that none of the rival jockeys took her on as had been anticipated. As it turned out the pace was slow and the usual back marker Defier kept in touch, with Lonhro in the box seat going easily behind. The great mare kicked clear around the turn but started to falter coming up the Randwick rise and had no answer as Defier accelerated to easily run past her. Defier maintained his brilliant run to the line and was outstanding in holding out the fast finishing Excellerator.

In a masterly ride Chris Munce had succeeded in pocketing Beadman on Lonhro who was stymied for runs twice in the straight, first when a rails run closed and again with Sunline veering out under pressure (just as she had done in last year's Cox Plate). With a clear run Lonhro would have figured in the finish instead of languishing in fourth.

The race proved a triumph for Geoff and Beryl White (of Bhima Stud, Scone) who are the breeders of both Defier and Excellerator. Not only was it a great result for Bhima but for the great Marscay who besides being the sire of Excellerator was broodmare sire of Defier.

Defier has been patiently handled by Guy Walter for former Dalama Stud (Muswellbrook) studmaster Jim Koureas and his partners, and has developed into one of the best middle distance horses in the country. A return bout with Lonhro is eagerly awaited.
