HE came, she conquered - but both were gallant. Sydney racegoers flocked to Rosehill to enjoy their first sight of Australia's reigning champion Northerly in the time honoured Rawson Stakes. Although beaten he did not disappoint. Trailing the leader Freemason to the turn, Northerly got a bit lost running the reverse direction for the first time, but once his mind was on the job he ranged up to take the lead. Freemason rallied briefly but Republic Lass (coming from last on the turn) was coming with a brilliant turn of foot to go to a half length  lead. However Northerly with his renowned fighting quality was not done with and in a thrilling last furlong came back again valiantly to go under by only a short half head. He was ahead again a stride past the post. Credit for the win should also go to the precise tactical timing and a brilliant ride by Brett Prebble.

Republic Lass the staying find of the autumn of 2002, has developed into a strong and classy mare this season. The Rawson was her first win since a hollow victory in last year's Australian Oaks, but in the mean time she has run well to place in the Caulfield Cup and three weight-for-age races. This autumn she put the writing on the wall with a strong first up run into fourth behind Lonhro in Apollo Stakes, and now looks like fulfilling her enormous early promise.

There were some good runs in the race. Consistent gelding Freemason ran his usual honest race into third place and Carnegie Express ran well for fourth looking well on target for his Sydney Cup mission. Last year's Australian Derby winner Don Eduardo finally fell victim to his leg problems and his retirement was announced after the race. Republic Lass's win was the second Group I winner from the Star Kingdom sire line in successive weeks.
