THE
Sydney Autumn Carnival triggered the emergence of another star in
three-year-old filly Bollinger who could not have been more impressive in
winning the NSW Thoroughbred Breeders (Coolmore) Classic, the only Gr.I. race
on the calender for fillies and mares. It was only the sixth start and fourth
win for this daughter of Golden Slipper winner Bint Marscay, and she has
developed quickly into a top class performer.
Chris
Munce took Bollinger to the lead in the large field and easily dictated the
pace which at best was muddling in the early stages. She accelerated
brilliantly after the turn and from there on gave none of her rivals a chance.
Nevertheless there were some good runs among the beaten division. Lovely Jubly,
although still a bit wayward, ran a much improved race to run home strongly for
second and the Melbourne mare Galapagos Gal continued her good form with a good
third. Eye catching run for the future was from Purple Groove who ran home very
strongly from a long way back for fourth.
Last
year's champion two-year-old, Victory Vein, ranged up looking a chance in the
straight but didn't go on with it. Sadly, the filly was subsequently injured in
a track accident and has been retired.
