LIGHTLY raced Marscay filly Fine Society the only filly in the field, put up a brilliant performance to outclass a field of the best three-year-old colts available which this season appear to be lacking real class over the longer distances.

In a field that comprised two New Zealand challengers in Pulitzer and Davidoff, King of Soul made the running. Vital Agreement was handy all the way and shot clear on entering the straight but was swamped when the challenges started to come. Fine Society was awkwardly placed on the rails, but extricated by Corey Brown exploded to the front with nothing behind her looking a chance.

The favourite was Hydrometer who run his usual honest race. He is probably the most consistent three-year-old this season. He won a listed race last spring but has since had his colours lowered in the Victoria Derby (by Helenus), the Norman Robinson (by Platinum Scissors), the Hobartville (by Thorn Park) and now his third in this race.

Best run in the race outside the winner was by Beaver who put in an exceptional run in the last 200 metres to gain a last stride second from Hydrometer.

Helenus missed the start but never flattered tight on the turning Canterbury track course didn't suit him as much. He was found to have a corn in his hoof the following day but his preparation for the Derby was to continue.

Fine Society was the 65th stakes winner and 14th Gr.1 winner sired by Widden Stud's deceased champion sire, Marscay who is also sire of another of this season's Gr.1 winners in Excellerator, and continues to have an immense influence on Australian breeding through his daughters.
