THE VRC
Sires' Produce Stakes was expected to go the way of the royally bred Subscribe
(Zabeel -Danelagh) following his impressive win over Winestock and Fresh Boy in
the listed Chairman's Stakes.
However
it was Winestock who emerged triumphant. Accustomed to leading in his previous
races, Winestock flew out of the gates and took a while to settle, but
eventually did so travelling comfortably behind the leaders. He cleared out in
the straight for a soft win giving Brett Prebble a nice going-away present
before leaving for a stint in Hong Kong. The very promising Fresh Boy was last
from an outside barrier for most of the way, gradually worked into a
challenging position, and finished on well for second, with the rest of the
field spreadeagled. Subscribe got too far out of his ground and ran on
reasonably for fifth. He will undoubtedly make into a good three-year-old.
Winestock
who cost only $21,000 as a yearling has also won the rich VRC Inglis Premier
Stakes, another race and two placings from his five starts, and has already
returned his connections over $600,000 for their investment.
