NORTHERLY scored one of his easiest and most impressive victories in his second Australian Cup success.

Beaten at his previous start when conceding nine kilograms to the winners, Northerly showed that that defeat was meaningless as the grand galloper "slaughtered" the field by an increasingly widening four lengths.

In this race Patrick Payne took the champion to the lead, galloping kindly on a loose rain until turning for home. By this time, Don Eduardo in an improved display of form was at his shoulder, but Payne was only kidding and Northerly extended. The talented Dehere three-year-old Natural Blitz came from last with a super run to cut Don Eduardo out of second place.

Fields Of Omagh was expected to be Northerly's main rival. He had a good run fourth on outside, but was under pressure on the home turn and weakened out of contention. Unfortunately he pulled up lame, at first expected to be out for the autumn but later reported to be recovering.
