FIVE-year-old Metal Storm gelding Old Fashion scored a fighting win over the favourite Hardrada in the Railway Stakes-G1, Western Australia's premier mile event and richest race. The consistent Corporate Bruce finished powerfully into third place in an exciting three-way finish for head by head margins.

It was the ultra consistent Old Fashion's 10th win in a 27 start career, which also includes eight placings. His stakes earnings of $715,900 is substantial considering the lower prizemoney raced for in Western Australia.

Old Fashion's win gave posthumous Group I honours to deceased Mungrup Stud sire Metal Storm (FR) and again emphasised the great loss from snake bite of the son of Kenmare, who died prematurely in 2001 at only 13 years of age. Metal Storm also sired the top class filly Kalatiara (a Group winner in USA and now at stud in Kentucky) and Storm Shot among his nine stakes winners, as well as recent Victorian Oaks-G1 third, Antique.

The ongoing influence of Star Kingdom at the top level in Australia was never more evident in the the Railway result, all three placegetters carrying the blood of the great horse close up. Old Fashion is from a Jevington (by Todman) mare, Hardrada is from a mare by Old Spice (by Kaoru Star) and Corporate Bruce is by successful sire Corporate Raider, and unraced son of Biscay.
