IT WAS
all Rubitano in the Victoria Racing Club Stakes-G1 (Salinger). The Mayfield-Smith trained gelding carried
topweight 57.5 to spreadeagle the Gr.I field in race record time. Winner of the
Newmarket Handicap earlier in the year, Rubitano is the first horse to win the
big Gr.I "straight six" double since his grandfather Century in 1973.
Sitting
behind the pace on the rails which proved the faster side of the straight
course Nash Rawiller shot Rubitano to the lead 100 metres out and the gelding
accelerated brilliantly to score the easiest sprint victory seen for some time.
Coming in 2-3/4 lengths behind was the luckless Intelligent Star, who had run
second to Rubitano in the Caulfield Sprint-G3 at his previous start, with early
leader Cosmic Strike holding on for third a long 4-1/2 lengths away.
Rubitano's
race record time of 1.07.17s was only 0.01 of a second outside the track record
established by Iglesia in the Standish Handicap-G3 in 2001.
Together
with Spinning Hill, Rubitano must now be rated as the best sprinter in
Australia, and a clash between these stars would be a great drawcard when they
return in the autumn.
