THE
Victoria Derby-G1 was robbed of a lot of interest with the scratching of
Platinum Scissors when he was found to have a temperature the day before.
Masterfully
ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, Hydrometer tried to lead all the way in pace that was
very slow considering the fast track. He kicked on really well when challenged
by the short priced favourite Helenus within the last 200 metres. when hitting
the front in a torrid fight, allowing Hydrometer to head him again. He rallied
to just get up in a tight short half-head finish. Third placed Ain't Here who
was a long neck away, was finishing all over the first two at the post.
With
Stephen King settling him well back in the field, the slow pace may not have
suited the boom colt Helenus, but nevetheless he was not as convincing as he
has been over shorter distances during the spring. The success of Helenus has
been a feature of the Melbourne spring carnival and a major triumph for his
popular trainer, Leon Corstens.
