George Hanlon relieved a camera wasn't required as Diatribe gave the octogenarian marvel a belated Caulfield Cup win to go with his numerous other features including three Melbourne Cups. Hanlon had been second with Arwon, Our Sophia and Congressman, all beaten in photo-finishes. Diatribe came from near last to win the 123rd Cup by length from Kaapstad Way, the 7/2 favourite Fairway gamely holding out Freemason for third. Kaapstad Way (14/1) one of the few to give Diatribe (8/1) a start from the 500m. Jim Cassidy weaved Diatribe into contention and, taking a gap left by John Marshall on French entry Mont Rocher (11th), swept past Fairway on the inside, the race over in a track record 1-25.32. That Fairway the only one in the first half of the field at the turn to gain a top-five finish indicative of the speed. Diatribe cost John Thompson $95,000 at the 1998 Easter sale - twice his sire's national average. Ranked in the top eight colts last season, defeating Freemason in the Rosehill Guineas, track bias contributing to his Derby seventh behind Fairway. Brief Truce stationed at Woodlands by Coolmore until 1998. Cut adrift by the Irish group, he moved to Germany and earlier this year to Switzerland's Sophrenof, Diatribe's Guineas success earning him a recall to the shuttle, and the Independent SS.
