The first crop Flying Spurs created history
with a 1-2 finish in the 55th running, All Time High picked up a grand bonus
before the Oaks. The race also provided a broodmare sire quinella for the
Djebel line stallion Northern Spring. All Time High had shown good potential
for Paul and Mark Crawford, for whom the other part-owner Denis Roberts
purchased the half-sister to All Our Mob privately for $110,000 at Easter,
1999, after Lex Tall (Lark Hill Stud) passed her in at $100,000. Lark Hill also
bred 2000 SA Derby winner Blue Murder. The Crawford brothers are building a
solid band of mares in the Adelaide Hills. The winners is trained by Aquanita
Racing partner Russell Cameron and started with another in Dan O'Sullivan at Morphettville.
Ironically, O'Sullivan saddled up Ascot Vale-Gr.2, Tranquil Star-Gr.3 and
Manifold-Gr.2 winner So Gorgeous, but she was beaten a long way out. So
Gorgeous the favourite in the absence of the deceased Unworldly. The first Gr.1
success for tall 26yo Steven Arnold who started riding in Alice Springs 10
years ago. He raced the filly back and she swooped late, out wide, to win going
away. To grab the quinella for her Arrowfield sire, Ponton Flyer wore down an
also brave Tanith (by deceased Arrowfield shuttler Chief's Crown) for her third
Gr.1 second. The remaining Flying Spur, Blab, was a rather luckless ninth. As
Meatloaf said, two out of three ain't bad.
