To previous dual winners in 120 Toorak editions: the talented mare Saxony (1948-9), Desert Breeze (1952-3) and Nicopolis (1963-4), add the extremely honest miler Umrum, the first to do it as a five and six-year-old - the others at four and five. The family now has three Toorak wins as Tobin Bronze won 32 years earlier. Amarco the fourth dam of Umrum, who is also related to the Brown's Victoria Derby winner Galena Boy and good quality Adelaide miler Parvo. Eddie Wilkinson rode Umrum when the Umatilla son won with 55kg from a wide gate in 1999. Jim Cassidy's frame inside the same weight this time and with the luxury of barrier 4 on a track drying, but still favouring on-pace runners near the rails, he controlled the race to bolt in from Go Flash Go - third a year earlier. The pattern against back runner Crawl and he did well to finish third. Mr Innocent always wide near the lead. Macdonald also saddled Gold Guru, an encouraging seventh at his third run on the comeback trail. Umrum continued the good recent run of those with 55kg or more after lightweights had dominated in the first half of the 1990s. Umrum was the 189th to pass $1 million in prizemoney.
