Universal Prince whizzed home out wide to
win impressively, as he'd done at his previous run in the 1600m Spring Stakes
at Newcastle. Settled within the last few of the 10 and seventh at the final
bend. This $80,000 Easter graduate a sound Derby prospect after eight starts
and his Conjola trainer, Bede Murray, heading him in that direction. By Scenic,
who arrived on the same 1990 shuttle as Danehill, and did quite well from
Lindsay Park and even better since going to Durham Lodge in WA in 1998.
Scenic's first Derby winner is Blevic and by coincidence, this colt is a
three-quarter brother to him in that Blevic is from Blooms, the second dam of
Universal Prince. Second was Falls the Shadow, an also promising three-year-old
named for a T S Elliot line. The immature son of Dance Floor and former top NZ
filly Kate's Myth - Australian bred by Kaoru Star - had won the Dulcify. Dance
Floor spent six seasons at Trelawney before moving home to California. Go Bint
was not disgraced in third and Reenact (sixth) looked in need of the run.
Spring Champion winners to collect a Derby are Kingston Town, Beau Zam, Nothin'
Leica Dane (Victoria) and Fairway.
