An exception to the rule that the Epsom is considered a race for improving four-year-olds, the age was was right but class ruled here: the winner, Shogun Lodge, a gelding with a Gr.1 wfa decision over Sunline and Adam in last year's George Main, before seconds in the Flemington and Randwick Derbies. The seventh winner of his age in the past nine Epsoms, and only Filante's 57kg more than the 56kg this Shogun carried - the age record High Caste's 59.5kg in 1940. Another echo for his sire Grand Lodge less than 24 hours after Sinndar collected the Arc. When Sinndar won the English Derby it was Freemason who chipped in with a Derby in Brisbane. Shogun Lodge, a $200,000 Easter yearling purchase by Les Samba promises even more at four and five. Smart ride by Glen Boss who sat in for the suspended Damien Oliver. Came from 14th at the bend to gain a run through on the inside, brushing last year's winner Allez Suez (fifth). As is usual for major Randwick miles, there were many other good performances, most notably by Crawl and Sorrento of the unplaced division. Tie the Knot didn't get clear but wasn't really travelling. Bob Thomsen previously won the race with Regal Native.
