Star Covet won his first race in three years to enable Pam Webber to became the first woman trainer to win the Brisbane Cup in its 132 year-history. To be fair to Star Covet this is one of the great comebacks. Just below top class in his Classic year, the Allen O'Brien-bred gelding developed into a good quality handicapper, winning the Prime Minister's Cup-Gr.2 at the Gold Coast, on his way to a sound third behind Praise Indeed and Yobro in the 1998 Brisbane Cup. However injuries to tendons in both forelegs, more particularly the off, saw him require a long period of rehabilitation under the care of vet John Crowley and talented horseman Graeme Spackman at Ken Roses' Berrima agistment-breeding farm. Rose had original trainer Rob Johnson pay $12,000 for Star Covet at the 1995 Sydney January sale and races him with his wife, Marea, mum and dad Enid and Ted, his brother and sister- in-law Gary and Leanne. The group raced Just a Printer, the Castlemaine winner on Brisbane Cup day 1994. Ken sent Star Covet to Webber after the Covetous seven-year-old's latest spell. Jason Taylor completed the comeback, recording his biggest success since missing almost 12 months through injury. Taylor placed the veteran sixth on the rails, moving to second on the final bend and tearing past pacemaker Maltese Falcon 250m out.
