The 108th Stradbroke was remarkable for a 1-2 result for the Crown Lodge operation of Bob and Jack Ingham (a day shy of his 73rd birthday), the gelded four-year-olds trained for them by John Hawkes. Crawl is the seventh homegrown millionaire for the Inghams and the second sired by Dr Grace. The deceased Australian Derby-winning son of Sir Tristram worked just three seasons at their Woodlands Stud before his accidental death. The other Dr Grace Gr.1 winner, Over, won the 2000 Doncaster and is joining the Woodlands roster this spring.
Hire had emerged with a slender lead in heavy traffic below the 200m. Crawl also raced worse than midfield, Darren Gauci gaining several inside runs before elbowing him into contention inside his stablemate. Hire tried hard but the Canny Lad son was out-muscled by Crawl. It provided Gauci's 28th Gr.1 but first Stradbroke success. He had been second on Rancho Ruler. The 57kg topweight Mr Innocent charged home out wide to be a breath away in third (he was second in 2000) at his final start before going to Wattle Brae. The 9/2 favourite Make Mine Magic also made up a lot of ground for a splendid fourth. Like Sunline, Crawl has Phar Lap's mum, Entreaty, as his eighth dam. His dam, Traipse is in foal to Octagonal, as is Crawl's At Talaq half-sister Souffle.
