Sheila Laxon achieved an Oaks double with a last gasp win by Ethereal over a tigerish Tempest Morn. The trainer took over the Laxon HQ at Cambridge when her husband Laurie moved to Singapore. She supplied 41/1 NZ Oaks winner Tapildo in January - both fillies are by former Cambridge shuttler Rhythm, from daughters of Sir Tristram. The seven-times Australian Champion sired the dams of three other Gr.1 winners in 2000-01 - Elevenses, Smiling Like and Viscount. His sons have also supplied seven Gr.1 winners - see race 507 Queensland Derby. Ethereal was bred by Peter and Phillip Vela from their Gr.1 winner Romanee Conti - named for the wine. She races for the brothers in the bridle her mum wore in winning the Hong Kong Cup. Laxon had intended to take her to Adelaide, switching targets when she found her unlikely to gain a run in a lead-up.
The 50th Oaks was a race of great depth and Tempest Morn had control of it until the final stride, Ethereal hurtling down the outside under Scott Seamer to deprive her of a third Gr.1 success and Gai Waterhouse - the only other woman to train a winner of this race (Zacheline) - her second Eagle Farm classic. Waterhouse also prepares the third-placed Altiero who turned in her best career run. Asia ran just below her SA Oaks win to finish fifth, just behind the consistent Life is Beautiful.
