King Keitel capped a grand training effort by Matamata conditioner Paul Jenkins and a top ride by Brian York to defeat Shogun Lodge, the odds-on favourite again forced into a runner-up role. York placed the Sir Tristram grandson fifth at the rail and they won with a great burst of acceleration, which carried them into the lead from hard-working pacemaker Maltese Beauty, the bias to inside runners in his favour. King Keitel punctuated a four-win streak late last year with success in the Counties Cup-Gr.2. Jenkins' Gr.1 victory continues the family run in Australia, his Cambridge-based brother, Brian, winning the Melbourne Cup with Jezabeel (Zabeel-Passefleur by Vice Regal) who is bred on a similar cross. Paul Jenkins bought his King for $NZ3,000 at the Summer Yearling Mixed auction, ostensibly for sale to Asia. But the colt was a windsucker scotching that and other deals. Jenkins and farmer-horse dealer Mahdi Wootten decided to race the horse, Wootten later selling 10% of his half to Eric Watson through the high profile owner's Westbury Stud.
King Keitel was saved when his dam Paula's Glory was granted a reprieve from the knacker's yard because she was heavily in foal, but she wound up there anyway after King Keitel was weaned. Keitel is also dead. He worked out of Rookley Stud at Matamata from 1987 until his death in February, 1999.
