This race again avoided the Doomben 10,000 to be decided nine days later. Although still a little depleted of quality, this first edition in its brand new slot on Adelaide Cup day - a fresh and welcome change - had quite a solid line-up from which the cream rose to the top. Sudurka and Aetates were staging a war for the major prize until Keeper zoomed home out wider to reduce their particular contest to that for second.
The Brett Prebble-partnered colt supplied Danehill with his 28th Gr.I winner from his Australian-breds, and 37th overall. Keeper had also beaten the older horses to win the Victoria Handicap-Gr.3 at his previous start and paid the penalty. His 55kg a kilo under wfa but saw him gain weight (a half kilo) from only last year's winner Marstic and Bradshaw. Of 29 three-year-old winners only four did it with more weight, the high class Royal Gem (58.5 in 1946) the most recent. Keeper was the first winner of his age since Boardwalk Angel arrived in 1989 - the previous male Daring Jon (1987) - and just the seventh in the past 40 years. It was Keeper's fourth win on end for Myles Plumb, who took over the preparation of the $225,000 Easter pass-in from Graeme Rogerson after he became the private trainer for Lloyd and Sue Williams. Best run along with the placegetters was Super Impressive, unlucky in seventh, beaten 1.8L.
