The 131st Cup field was led out by Might and Power and the champion's owner Nick Moraitis was able to escort the winner back as he pays the bills for Apache King. Two-in-a-row for Aquanita Racing, Robert Smerdon preparing Bohemiath and Russell Cameron successful with his second Cup runner, following Majestic Avenue's fifth last year. A milestone victory for the talented Melbourne conditioner as he learned his craft at Morphettville under his late father,Ted.
Moraitis paid $45,000 for his Apache at Easter, Jack Denham training the gelding until last year. Apache King followed an unlucky fourth in the Warrnambool Cup by winning the major Cup lead-up, the Carlton Draught (Fisher) Stakes. Other winners of this double since 1980 are; Yashmak, Dealer's Choice, Moss Kingdom Lord Reims (twice), Water Boatman, Ideal Centreman, French Resort and Cronus - an almost 50% strike rate - winners four and up rarely miss this lead-up.
Peter Mertens outrode the others to arrive by a half-length, going around just one horse from ninth at the 1200m. They hit the front on the home turn and held on from Native Jazz, on whom Brett Prebble led before dropping to third inside the 800m. A protest was quickly dismissed. The runner-up put in a huge effort at his 10th start. Grand campaigner Skybeau a gallant fifth at his fifth Cup attempt and a younger version would have been right there. Another local hero, Frenzel Rhomb, was a beaut fourth, Cavallo Bruno a solid sixth after being trapped wide.
