Asia lost her maiden status in the best possible way at the track where her dam had beaten the males in the last South Australian Derby run in the spring (1982). Coming off a third in the Australian Oaks, in which runner-up Tempest Morn was second, and a fourth to that filly in the Australasian Oaks, Asia this time was able to outstay her co-Sydney rival off a solid pace. Tempest Morn displayed her usual courage in attempting to join (Our) Tristalight and Episode as winners of the Morphettville Oaks double, but was no match in the end. South Sea Pearl followed her luckless shorter Oaks second with a solid third to deny Victoria Oaks placegetter Lolita Star, Stephen Baster saving ground on the latter.
The Jack Denham prepared Asia is the first to win this race as a maiden since ex-NZ filly Bluepak in 1964. Since the Oaks moved to the autumn in 1986, other winners to have gone via the Randwick Oaks are: Cimarra (5th), Lady Liberty (2nd), Lee's Bid (2nd), and Zacheline (8th). Although sponsored by a rival operation - Vinery - the race was a Coolmore triumph, the placegetters by its rostered stallions Danehill and Thunder Gulch. Damien Oliver also won the 1999 edition on Episode. Bred by Jim Fleming, this half-sister to the Australian Derby winner Dr Grace is raced by the Tyreel Stud owner and his sons Lee, Dean and Paul.
