Big Pat is the fourth winner of the VRC St Leger-SA Derby double in 18 editions since the latter race was moved to the autumn, the others are Count Chivas and the Cummings pair Shark's Fin and Shiva's Revenge. Subzero, a grey like Pat, had run second at Flemington and added the Melbourne Cup to his SA Derby and Adelaide Cup successes. The SA Derby also launched the careers of Dulcify, Dayana, Stormy Rex, Brewery Boy and Gatum Gatum in the past 40 years.
The seventh Australasian Gr.1 winner this season from the Star Kingdom line was bred by John Sharpe, the Melbourne businessman sending the American-conceived mare he bought for $600 to Full and By at a $1500 fee. Put in Place (NZ) has a weaning filly by Wild Harmony and is in foal to Gold Ace. Partnered by Peter Mertens, who rode him extremely well, Big Pat easily outstayed the Lee Freedman-trained Bush Padre, on whom he'd been replaced by Brett Prebble after an unplaced run in the Port Adelaide Guineas-LR. Big Pat is named for the road bordering the property at Warburton, Victoria, where he is trained by Peter Tulloch. Licensed out of Yarra Glen, about an hour's drive away, Tulloch, prepares a small team in the spare time he has after managing a beef cattle operation.
