Falvelon had been one of the few millionaires not to have succeeded at Gr.1 but this talented sprinter set the record straight at his eighth attempt - the first seven having yielded four placings. His sixth graded success was an emphatic one from Spinning Hill and assisted by a patient ride from Michael Cahill on the $4.20 favourite. Cahill was the horse's regular partner but lost the spring rides, and very nearly his life, in a race smash last August. Cahill's first Gr.1 success coincides with that of the four-year-old's trainer, Dan Bougoure, strapper for Strawberry Road when his father, Doug, prepared the horse.
Also the first Gr.1 success for the owners and the late breeder Brian Falvey, who died before Falvelon raced. 'We run this horse for him,' his widow Dawn Falvey said after a spring success. Falvelon's managing part owner races the horse with her late husband's best friends Lindsay Towner, Lindsay Stewart, Lesley Kelly and Brian Daunt. This belated victory also puts the prematurely deceased Alannon in the Gr.1 scoreboard. Last year's winner Mr Innocent rocketed home for a grand third from a wide gate. Few, however, could begrudge Falvelon his Gr.1 day. The pride of Queensland had waited long enough. He was the fourth of his age to win in the past nine editions, Mr Innocent preceding him, and the previous pair, Unequalled and Flitter, successful before the race changed to wfa.
