Tempest Morn gained her Oaks consolation after going under to Rose Archway in the Australian Oaks. This her second Gr.1 success as she'd beaten Rose Archway in the Ansett (Storm Queen) on the way to Randwick. Because of the vagaries of tying autumn dates to Easter, this shorter of the two Oaks they have at Morphettville is often eclipsed by the one in Sydney. In fact the Thunder Gulch filly is the first to win this after competing in the Randwick Oaks since this race was moved from its February time slot in 1993. Grand Archway ran second (to Episode) in this after winning the Australian Oaks and the only other two to place in both Oaks are Canny Lass and Mannerism.
This event started in 1982 to headline the meeting corresponding with the Adelaide yearling sales. Despite having Rose of Kingston as its initial winner and several other high class fillies on the honour-role it has become a lead-up to the SA Oaks and could do with a name change to something like the Great Southern Guineas or Fillies' Championship and always be on the first Saturday in May. This the second Oaks success for the Waterhouse stable, following the SA Oaks win with Zacheline. To win his first Australasian Oaks, Jim Cassidy controlled the race from the front, cheap midrace fractions assisting the winner to hold off South Sea Pearl; a clever ride.
