The high end of the juvenile category in the Official Classifications was decided as Viscount recovered from a mishap to reprise his Sires' Produce Stakes win. That the Quest For Fame colt's winning Sires' margin was halved here, was entirely due to a flock of seagulls. Deep inside the straight, Viscount was clearing out and a big gap beckoned. But in shying from the birds, the black colt veered sharply to the right. Rodney Quinn stayed on, Ustinov and Miss Bussell loomed but Viscount recovered his poise to win by 1-3/4 lengths from Ustinov. This son of Seeking the Gold and champion mare Let's Elope also looks a great classics prospect next season. The same might also be said for the next pair, Danzero filly Miss Bussell and Carnegie son Sircarn Damon, little separating them for third. Golden Slipper winner Ha Ha could only manage seventh.
Viscount is the 36th to complete the AJC Sires' and Champagne double, others since the latter race was increased to 1600m are Luskin Star (1977), Tierce (1991), Burst (1992), Encounter (1997) and Assertive Lad (2000).
