For his third Gr.1 win and first beyond the Randwick mile, the Bob Thomsen-trained Shogun Lodge was breathtakingly good. The high class four-year-old deserved another major success after his grand Doncaster second with topweight and he delivered it to himself with a great burst of acceleration. Although tiring on the line, he was entitled to after racing deep in midfield to the home turn, Glen Boss placing him in the clear at the rise and then gathering in Melbourne horse Go Flash Go. Although Len Beasley got away with soft fractions on him, the Archway son showed plenty of courage in the straight. El Mirada's rider Brian York, protested unsuccessfully against the winner. The All-Aged victor was inconvenienced by Shogun Lodge but not enough for stewards to reverse the result.
The winner, a $200,000 Easter yearling purchase by Les Samba, has returned almost $3.3m. As a son of the predominantly Jack and Bob Ingham-owned Grand Lodge, he completed a big day for them and Woodlands after Viscount's Champagne victory. Shogun Lodge should again be near the top of the Classifications with another pair of Gr.1 victories and seconds to go with a classic year which although unfulfilled with his Derby seconds, was otherwise rewarding. As a gelding, he should continue to achieve for his sire at five.
