Sunline was expected to successfully defend her 2000 win in this race, but the champion New Zealand five-year-old was run down and finished third, as she had been when behind Jim and Tonic and Fairy King Prawn in the Dubai Duty Free-Gr.2 on March 24. The Randwick defeat was her first on a heavy track, which in the past has posed no problems for her. For El Mirada, it was his fourth graded win in five seasons, the previous one at Eagle Farm last June when prepared by Bart Cummings. The six-year-old is by El Moxie, a US import to the Larter family's Woodlawn Stud, Tasmania, in 1991.
El Moxie has been on the roster of the Victorian branch of Emirates Park by arrangement since 1996. El Mirada was bred and partly owned by the Larters, who also bred and raced Caulfield Guineas winner Alfa, by El Moxie from a Kaoru Star daughter. El Mirada is prepared by John Size, who has coaxed Gr.1 wins from several hitherto reticent gallopers. El Mirada and Sunline were split by a luckless Final Fantasy. Sunline was not on her toes in the enclosure as is usual and became stirred up on the way to the start. She broke last of the six and had to work to find the lead. Although a tenth Gr.1 win eluded her, the $32,000 for third enabled her to pass the A$8m prizemoney mark.
