CAPTAIN KIDD. 9 wins at 5f, 8f, Sandown National Breeders' Produce S, 2d Gimcrack S, 3d July S.Rose Archway is the second Randwick Oaks winner for Barree Stud's Archway, the Thatching son also in the books as the sire of Grand Archway, the top female of her generation - with Sunline keeping a lower profile. Grand Archway also included the Victoria Oaks in four Gr.1 wins and was third in the Randwick Derby. The Rose had just failed to reel in Tempest Morn in the Ansett Australia Stakes-Gr.1, Brian York vainly carrying the contest to the stewards room. In totally different and heavy conditions, the same fillies engaged in another war, this time Rose Archway a shade too strong at the finish for the Thunder Gulch daughter. Clarry Conners had previously won the Oaks with the Derby winning Research. Rose Archway is the fourth winner in six years to finish first or second in the Rosehill lead-up, Kenbelle and On Air also second and Danendri first. The Ansett had been the first run beyond 1600m for Rose Archway. Brian York was previously second on Love Dance in the 1995 Oaks, that edition won by Circles of Gold, who like Rose Archway was from a daughter of Zamazaan. This Jack Hirsch bred Oaks winner was selected by Vern Rayner at the 1999 Melbourne Autumn sale and purchased from Roselands for $12,000. The Melbourne agent had also hunted and bought Skalato for $15,000.
