A training triumph for John Size, who finally coaxed the big performance he knew Padstow had in him. The moody veteran had been one of those charging home just behind Black Bean and Commands in the first $1m Galaxy 12 months earlier, when the bias played against him. A year on, and on a good track with a bit of give, he was let down out wider by Darren Beadman and the six-year-old did the rest, sprinting clear and holding the luckless Camena at bay by more than a length. She had been held up over the rise. Catatonic just pipped a brave Ateates for third at his first run for almost a year.
Padstow was bred by the Evans family at Inman Valley Stud and is the second Gr.1 winner for deceased Tudor Vale (SA) stalwart Francis Bacon, the first was 1988 Goodwood winner Cameronic, but his best undoubtedly was New Atlantis. Jon’s Pleasure is by former Inman resident Jon George. After missing to Euclase, she dropped a filly to Leica Kenmare and went to Centre Stalls in his first year. Padstow's form in four runs since his Missile-Gr.3 win last July was the reason he was almost 50/1 at which he is the longest-priced Galaxy winner, and twice that of Manuan and Masked Party.
