Universal Prince joined Octagonal and Fairway as the third autumn winner of the Canterbury Guineas-Derby double. But for a generally perceived pilot error in the Rosehill Guineas, he would probably have joined Moorland (1943), Martello Towers (1959), Imagele (1973) and Octagonal as a Triple Crown winner. The 15/8 favourite was perfectly suited by the very fast tempo and raced closer in seventh. He unleashed a powerful burst of acceleration for Justin Sheehan to dash past the pack over the rise and win by almost four lengths. Sir Clive ran home solidly to reprise his NZ Derby second and Danamite headed the remainder after seconds in the Canterbury and Rosehill Guineas. Reenact worked home well for fourth and shock Tancred winner Curata Storm battled for fifth, just ahead of Sale of Century. The time was 2.4s outside Octagonal's race record, but the track played a shade slower than good after heavy rain earlier in the week.
The Robert Sangster and David Hayes (Meadowvale) bred Universal Prince deserves a shot at stud after he finishes running for Bede Murray and his owners. A sole purchase by Murray at Easter 1999, at $80,000, he is three-quarter brother to Blevic, the Scenic half-brother to his dam, who was third in the 1995 Derby after winning the Victoria Derby.
Despite a subsequent Queen Elizabeth Stakes failure against his elders, Universal Prince is the undisputed generation leader and in the Randwick Derby confirmed that, given a reasonable track and minimal bias, he would have won at Flemington, instead of running second to Randwick failure Hit the Roof.
