Tempest Morn is the first southern hemisphere Gr.1 winner for Thunder Gulch, also a welcome Australian Gr.1 win for owner-breeder Eduardo Cojuangco, on the anniversary of Crown Glory's narrow defeat by Belle du Jour in the Golden Slipper. The Gai Waterhouse trained and Danny Beasley partnered Tempest Morn enjoyed a good run in third, sprinted clear halfway down the straight and held on to defeat the luckless Rose Archway by a neck. Brian York lost again in the stewards room.
Tempest Morn's success came less than 24 hours before Point Given won the Santa Anita Derby-Gr.1 on his way to an attempted emulation of the Kentucky Derby triumph by his sire, Thunder Gulch. The Ansett Australia winner is from her sire's first Australian crop, Point Given from his second in the north. Tempest Morn is an “American” product, her dam Palm Beach Deb by Buckpasser son Akureyri. Tempest Morn is her ninth foal and, after foaling a filly to Barathea last spring, she visted Timber Country. The latter, also a Mr. Prospector grandson was third to Thunder Gulch at Churchill Downs before defeating him in the Preakness. This was a good Australian Oaks trial by the first pair, and also by Calm Smytzer and Asia, who made late ground for third and fourth.
