Curata Storm tipped out the best stayers in training at 90/1. Racing rearward, Rod Quinn circled his opponents midrace and took the lead 900m out. Once there, they defied the older stayers to run them down. Those chasing included Tie the Knot, trying for a third straight win at Australia's only 2400m wfa race at Gr.1 level, Giovana, Kaapstad Way, Hill of Grace and Sky Heights. In the end, the others left it for Kaapstad Way to catch the lone three-year-old runner and he failed by a neck as the post arrived, with Giovana and Tie the Knot close up. Curata Storm could manage only fifth when backing up in the AJC Derby seven days later, the Derby winner Universal Prince bypassing this race for the Tulloch. He would have been extremely competitive here. But the winner could only defeat those present and, aided by an enterprising Quinn ride, he did that wonderfully well to give John Hawkes a win to go with that of Octagonal.
The fifth Australian Star Kingdom line winner of a Gr.1 for the season (as well as one in New Zealand) is the second Gr.1 staying winner of Curator, he and full sister Voile d'Or both sired by Independent Stallion Station's speed influence Dieu d'Or. Curator has a yearling by Canny Lad, a weanling filly by Grand Lodge and is foal to Octagonal for Ian McRobert's Tareena Bloodstock.
