Gai Waterhouse took racing to national headlines and beyond with her first Slipper success, her 1-2-3 finish, plus sixth and 12th from a record five runners was a stunning success. The six Golden Slipper wins by her father Tommy Smith included a pair of 1-2 finishes, but no trainer had dominated this or any eastern Gr.1 so completely as to supply the trifecta since Dick Bradfield in the 1919 Caulfield Cup. Colin Hayes achieved the same feat in the 1977 South Australian Oaks.
All of the above overshadowed the fifth winner by the remarkable Danehill - that's five in eight southern generations! - plus seconds with Shovhog and Crowned Glory. It should secure Danehill's sixth Australian Juvenile title and possibly a fifth General Earnings trophy.
Ha Ha looked more robust than the second placed colt Excellerator, and with fillies receiving a 3kg advantage over the males, she was at good odds of 16/1 to his 13/4 favourite. This son of the 1982 Golden Slipper winner Marscay tried hard but Ha Ha was too strong, despite being posted wide in around seventh. It was also the first Slipper for Jim Cassidy, second on Comely Girl (in a TJ quinella) and Justice Prevails. The 45th Slipper winner races in similar interest to the previous and amazing winner Belle du Jour. Ha Ha was bred by Robert Sangster, also co-breeder of the Derby winner.
