Sale of Century supplied Prized with his first Gr.1 success, his victory not immediately apparent: the late burst out wide under Larry Cassidy appeared to leave them just short of catching New Zealand three-year-old Danamite and Brian York. Scenic Warrior rather unlucky in third between the pair, a half-neck shy of the major prize. Sale of Century's momentum just enough to relegate Danamite to his third Gr.1 minor placing - the others in the NZ 2000 and Canterbury Guineas. Rings of Gold (Marscay -Olympic Aim), a brother to Circles of Gold, was a splendid fourth, and the only filly to take on the males, Gentle Genius (by Danehill), was a courageous fifth after leading.
Runaway Canterbury Guineas winner Universal Prince ended up being ridden for luck near the inside by Justin Sheehan. They appeared to cope with the heavy traffic, but ended up behind a wall of runners in seventh, one place below his Victoria Derby conqueror Hit the Roof. Sale of Century at $40,000 NZ Premier buy for Ron Dufficy and bred by Jim Campin from a family which contains several Chequers' gems, dual Oaks winner Domino, (Kiwi) Hero and Campin's great favourite Vice Regal. John Hawkes' second Rosehill Guineas, the first Octagonal, was assisted by the addition of blinkers.
