Sunline was otherwise engaged this year, running third in Dubai around 12 hours after Porto Roca had achieved her fourth Gr.1 placing and first Gr.1 win in holding off a rather luckless Lady Mulan and Belle du Jour, the latter 50 weeks after her astonishing Slipper win. The finish exciting and Lady Mulan and Glen Boss beaten by traffic delays near the inside, but traffic had also been a contributor when Porto Roca came so close without winning at Gr.1 level on several occasions and few would begrudge this consistent mare a Gr.1 win. The minor placegetters might have also been better served with a wfa scale rather than the quality handicap conditions. At his first ride on her Damien Oliver might have accentuated the difference for her from eighth place at the turn. Air She Goes was a brave fourth after setting the pace and Heather a great fifth after missing the start badly.
Danny O'Brien paid $70,000 for Porto Roca at Easter, 1998. She's the fourth foal of Antelliere, second to Joanne in the 1990 Light Fingers-Gr.2 and a winner of four Sydney races. She is in foal to Flying Spur. The race's 29th winner was bred by Noble Park proprietors Peter and Wendy Moran along with Ron and Debbie Gilbert of another Queensland stud, Highgrove.
