Rave reviews attended the performance of Universal Prince his incredible last-to-first victory setting the media gush factor to full volume. He gave most of his potential Derby rivals a start and a thumping around a tight Canterbury circuit seemingly unsuited to this substantial Bede Murray-trained colt. That saw him sent out at $7, almost twice the odds of the third-placed favourite, Melbourne three-year-old, Scenic Warrior, the pair split by extremely honest NZ gelding Danamite. Hit the Roof, conqueror of Universal Prince in the Victoria Derby last spring when the wet suited himfar more, bypassed the Guineas for the Australian Cup and finished a grand second to Northerly on a concrete-like surface - as if to demonstrate he's far more than a soft tracker. The fifth-placed Reenact is still improving and Sir Clive is better than his sixth suggests.
Robert Sangster co-bred Universal Prince (with Meadowvale Pastoral), and he's a three-quarter brother to his Victoria Derby winner Blevic. Bede Murray paid $80,000 for the classic colt at Easter, 1999, Universal Prince is raced by Terry Hogan, his daughter Vicky Brady and her husband Mark. You suspect the well-related colt is a long way from finishing his contribution to the already tremendous reputation owned by the Durham Lodge-based former shuttler Scenic. Autumn winners of the Canterbury Guineas-Derby double are Octagonal and Fairway.
