Spectatorial emerged from the first generation of Spectrum to supply the first Gr.1 winner for the now Yarraman Park-based son of Rainbow Quest. Given that Spectrum’s stock should be seen to more advantage at three and older - although he had 15 individual 2yo winners last year with his first Irish crop - a juvenile Gr.1 win is a grand bonus. Spectrum won the Irish 2000 Guineas and after an injury which prevented a classic appearance at Epsom, won the Champion Stakes. Spectatorial led and fought on solidly when outsprinted by fillies True Jewels and La Lagune in the Blue Diamond. He drew wide in the Sires' and, on a dead track which favoured swoopers out wide, was ridden to help establish the pattern by Paddy Payne. Despite covering extra ground they swamped Tuscanos, Valkyrian and La Lagune. Superblitz and Ustinov were also not disgraced in fifth and sixth.
Bred by Ross Daisley from his Reginald Allen winner, Reign of Honour, Spectatorial was purchased by Lee Freedman from the Arrowfield draft for $80,000 at Easter 2000. Ownership a quasi-Australian and Hong Kong-based mix of Rob Clemenger, Andrew Harcourt, Eddie Au Yeung, and Rod and Ron Dufficy. Freedman lost the colt, however, to Mathew Ellerton, trainer of recent Gr.1 winners Desert Sky and Miss Kournikova.
