There have been some stunning wins - and near misses - in this race since it was first run at wfa in 1979, just in time for Dulcify to defeat Manikato. Intergaze turned on a grand one-horse show the previous year and Northerly's performance was right up with that, even if the ride wasn't. Greg Childs still did as instructed in allowing the Perth horse to slide rather than pull in the middle stages, even if this tactic consigned them to remaining wide without cover just off the lead. That Northerly was able to sprint away from them and win by more than three lengths made it memorable. For mine, it was the best wfa win by a horse out of the west since that beautiful black, Aquanita, was collecting Cox Plates and other trophies in the 1950s. Expect Northerly to attempt to go a couple of rungs higher than Aquanita's third in a Melbourne Cup.
Few four-year-old winners of an Australian Cup can have been more inexperienced than the Serheed son and with nine previous runs each, he and year younger runner-up Hit the Roof less experienced than all but the other three-year-olds Sale of the Century and Neptune's Journey. The hard track was against several of the runners but one it didn't stop was Hit the Roof, who worked home hard after covering ground. Kaapstad Way needs farther than 2000m.
