Tie the Knot collected a third straight Chipping Norton to surpass the feat of tough-as-teak Queensland stayer Lough Neagh, who spread his treble over five depression years of the 1930s. To win his 11th Gr.1, the grand son of the Tait family's good filly, Whisked, sauntered along near the rear with Paddy Payne as is usual. This time, however, he was strung up in traffic from the pole position. He accelerated through a gap to grab the lead from the pacemaker, Akhenaton, and easily hold out Dottoressa and Referral in the run home. Dottoressa was left to compete in this after a mix-up over acceptance dates saw her miss the Australian Cup, but no doubt she appreciated the give in the ground in a race transferred from Warwick Farm to Randwick, than a rock-hard Flemington. The 77th edition's minor placegetters by the deceased Dr. Grace, who did better than both of them in winning the 1990 edition, although he had no Tie the Knot to contend with. He was also third in 1991 to Super Impose, a winner again 1992 and the race's only other multiple collector since it was reduced from 2100 to 1600m in 1979 - it has been Gr.1 since 1986. Whisked missed to Woodman but is safely in foal to Grand Lodge. Her current yearling is a Zabeel filly.
