Toledo, a horse with wonderful staying bloodlines for such a grand sprinter capped his career by finally nailing a Newmarket at his fourth attempt. He had come perilously close at his initial rush down the Flemington 1200m, failing by a nose to snaffle up General Nediym, a year younger than Toledo at three and long since gone to stud, as Toledo toils on for Kate Torr. The $90,000 Easter yearling bred by David Weeks had supplied Russell Cameron with his first Gr.1 success in defeating Monopolize in the 1998 Stradbroke. To repeat that success he ran down his stablemate, the whipper-snipper Mannington, on the flat side, the also three-year-old Show of Heart brilliant in disposing of those on the stand side. Black Bean (fifth) was unlucky not to place.
The odd horse such as Redelva are exceptions to the rule that sprinting is a young horse's caper. Since an eight-year-old Tauto failed to catch Coolalinga by a head in 1974, the only interim aged runners to place were Foregone Conclusion (third 1983), Redelva (a neck second to Shaftesbury Avenue in 1991) and All Our Mob (third in 1997). Toledo is only the fifth aged winner in 128 editions of the grand sprint, the previous Reperio, also a gelded seven-year-old, in 1949 - and he'd been the first in 28 years!
