MISS Kournikova was the eighth successful 3YO filly in this time honoured race; the others being Marie Louise (1885), Wild Rose (1891), Baringhup (1927), Arachne (1935), Citius (1966), Dual Choice (1971) and With Me (1991). She was also the 28th winner of her age, and the ninth in the past 14 renewals. For Contract Racing head David Moodie, the win balanced the ledger after Paint was beaten a nose by Dantelah in the 1999 edition. The Brett Prebble-partnered filly named for the tennis player is one of 20 foals left by Mr Greeley at the Gone West son's only southern season, at The Independent Stallion Station - the stud also being closely linked with the success of True Jewels in the Blue Diamond through Brief Truce.
Miss Kournikova a belated first foal after two missed seasons from On Centre Court, when her dam was 9 years old. On Centre Court was a winner of three Melbourne races and, like her daughter, bred at Pine Ridge Stud, Whittlesea, Victoria. The winner had only a short half head to spare from Miss Pennymoney, Brocco's dual Gr.1 winner returning to form with a vengeance. Show a Heart also staged a stunning return to racing to grab third, just ahead of the also strong-finishing Flavour. The 62.08s easily beat the course mark of 62.41s by Camena.
