IT SEEMS fitting that the judge was unable to separate two high class three- year-olds, both previous-start winners of a Gr.1: Desert Sky against his elders in the Orr and Mr Murphy in the Australian Guineas. Notwithstanding the back runners had little chance the way the race unfolded - something becoming more prevalent - the gelded pair were magnificent: the Hurricane Sky son fighting on desperately well but hanging out far enough to let the Danehill draw level right on the post, the latter on a seven day back-up. Their age group have now won eight of the past 16 Futuritys, but supplied all five runners when Testa Rossa won last year.
Lee Freedman has trained four winners of the race. Bob Hoysted, Lou Robertson and Angus Armanasco the joint record holders with five. Damien Oliver had partnered Mannerism but sat out Schillaci's double, his second win on Testa Rossa. Darren Gauci had previously come closest when second on Shame, runner-up to Mouawad. Porto Roca again impressive with her third Gr.1 placing, after the Australian Oaks and Show Day Cup.
